Civil Discourse by Design: A Practical Framework for Difficult Classroom Conversations

Difficult classroom conversations do not become productive simply because students are told to be respectful.Civil Discourse by Design gives Grades 6-12 educators a practical framework for designing, facilitating, and learning from difficult classroom conversations while maintaining academic rigor.Built around the CLEAR Framework-Clarify, Locate, Establish, Actively Facilitate, and Reflect, Repair, and Record-the book helps educators make deliberate instructional decisions before, during, and after discussion.Readers will examine how to frame appropriate questions, select and use evidence, prepare students for participation, distinguish disagreement from personal attacks, respond when conversations become difficult, document consequential incidents, and determine when support beyond the classroom is necessary.Rather than prescribing scripts or predetermined conclusions, Civil Discourse by Design emphasizes professional judgment.Because the goal is not perfect conversation. The goal is better judgment.
