Until now, 'burnout syndrome' has been viewed almost exclusively from an individual perspective. However, today's institutions are increasingly having to deal with the newly developed concept of collective burnout, which is characterised primarily by symptoms such as lack of energy, reduced performance and, ultimately, divisions within teams. Particular attention should be paid to nursing teams, as they are exposed to enormous psychological and physical stress. However, nursing teams are particularly vulnerable to collective burnout simply because they have specific team characteristics that set them apart from teams in other professions. For this reason, preventive measures to avoid team burnout are becoming increasingly important.
