Bol For over a year, Michael Anranter examined the role of associations and museums in achieving cultural equality and conducted an in-depth study of Milan's associative landscape. Adopting an exploratory approach, the author analyses the city's self-image as a community of Milanesi, whose representatives show no hesitation in taking responsibility for integration. If Milan's political elite are to be believed, Milan is already a postmodern and internationally recognised centre of excellence, art, culture and, above all, diversity. Contrary to these grand ambitions, however, strategic hurdles come to light in discussions with representatives of both transnational and local associations: Equality requires mediation, a commitment to institutions that are not particularly trustworthy, and, above all, a long-term cultural and integration strategy. The perspectives and viewpoints presented by the interviewees shed light on the challenges facing Milan and other Italian cities. They demonstrate that structural changes alone are the key to equal participation in cities.
