This study explores contemporary forms of marriage in Brazzaville through an ethnographic investigation conducted in three of the city's districts. It highlights the diversity of marital arrangements-incomplete marriages, tolerated unions, and informal cohabitation-revealing arrangements that defy customary norms. Far from representing a break with tradition, these practices reflect a reconfiguration of rules at the everyday level, within a context of economic precariousness and social instability. Young people's marital trajectories are shaped by family expectations, material demands, and coping strategies. The dissertation offers an anthropological analysis of the tensions between the formal and the informal, between norms and lived experience, by examining how individuals navigate norms without rejecting them. It is an anthropology of close relationships, attentive to the everyday dynamics of alliance in an uncertain environment.
