Criminal Investigation of Child Pornography

Child sexual exploitation and abuse online is rarely discussed publicly and often goes unreported. Children over the age of 12 who become involved with online predators are often less likely to disclose what is happening to them because they may feel they have made a mistake. As a result, they experience shame and fear judgment from their parents and those around them. Unfortunately, victims are often blamed, regardless of their age. In many cases, particularly in rural areas, such incidents are viewed as a source of shame for both the victim and the family. Under these circumstances, people may be reluctant to speak openly about their negative experiences. Law enforcement authorities therefore encourage parents and guardians to talk regularly with their children about their online activities, monitor who they communicate with, and immediately report any suspected abuse or inappropriate communication to the police.
