Criminal Justice Systems and Organised Crime: Old Problems New Perspectives: (XIII AIDP International Symposium for Young Penalists, Rome, Italy, 10-11 October 2025)

This issue of the Revue Internationale de Droit Pénal presents a second selection of contributions from the XIII AIDP Young Penalists Symposium, entitled “Responses to Organised Crime: Between Tradition and Innovation”, held at the University of Rome Unitelma Sapienza on 10-11 October 2025 and jointly organised by Unitelma Sapienza, the AIDP Young Penalists Committee, and the Italian National Group of the AIDP. With the contribution of young scholars from several jurisdictions, the volume investigates old problems and new perspectives of legal responses to organised crime: the use of non-criminal and hybrid enforcement tools, the growing centrality of economic and transnational criminal activities, and the challenges faced by criminal procedure and international cooperation. This issue explores the growing hybridisation of enforcement strategies while underscoring the enduring tension between effectiveness and fundamental guarantees.Through this approach, the volume provides a critical and comparative perspective on the evolving boundaries of contemporary criminal law. Emanuele Birritteri is Tenure-Track Assistant Professor of Criminal Law at the University of Rome Unitelma Sapienza. He is also Member of the AIDP Young Penalists Committee. Gaia Caneschi is Associate Professor of Criminal Procedure Law at the University of Milan. She is also Member of the Board of the Italian National Group of the AIDP. Yuto Yokoyama is full-time Lecturer at the Tohoku Gakuin University in Japan. He is also Member of the AIDP Young Penalists Committee.
