Cyrillic Manuscripts: Script and Language, Scribes Collections: 12

This volume holds the key to understanding the pre-modern culture of Eastern and Southeastern Europe and presents a wide range of disciplinary viewpoints. Some chapters focus on varieties of language, others on translation techniques, yet others on scribal and collecting practices. Cyrillic manuscripts are key to understanding the pre-modern cultures of Eastern and Southeastern Europe. This collection, which brings together ten authors from seven different countries, presents a wide range of interdisciplinary viewpoints on the study of manuscripts from the Middle Ages and the Early Modern period (from c. 1000 to c. 1600). Themes include language, translation techniques, and scribal and collecting practices. The chapters provide a unique survey of Cyrillic literacy, encompassing religious and legal texts, as well as their transmission and language. Collectively, this volume provides a broad insight into the current state of scholarship in the field. It will stimulate methodological reflection and further research. This volume is the outcome of a project initiated by the Balkan History Association.
