The deterioration and maintenance of engineering structures are a constant source of concern that can result in considerable costs and cause serious damage to the structure, both for public authorities and for users. There are two fundamental aspects to this issue: prevention and remediation. Of these two considerations, the first is the most important; indeed, the engineer in charge of the design must know how to:¿ Select materials suited to the weather conditions and the site;¿ Design the structure in such a way as to prevent serious deterioration (at least for the structure's expected lifespan);¿ Ensure that the structure is not allowed to deteriorate completely.If deterioration cannot be prevented, the structure must then be repaired.The decision to repair is the result of a lengthy analysis process that involves identifying the deterioration, determining the types of deterioration affecting the structure, assessing the structure's condition, and finally evaluating the need for repair.
