When Dr. Andrew Bagby was murdered by his jealous ex-girlfriend, filmmaker Kurt Kuenne decided to make a documentary about his childhood friend. One last joint film project, like the ones the two friends had always made when they were growing up. Kuenne takes his camera and a box full of tapes and crosses America for interviews with everyone who knew Andrew while he was alive. It turns out that Andrew's ex is pregnant, and the unborn son will be named Zachary. Kuenne decides to make his film for Zachary, so that the boy will have an idea of the man his father was. But this is far from the last dramatic twist in Kuenne's gripping film, which gradually transforms into a true crime thriller.Dear Zachary is clearly a very personal project for Kuenne. He not only wrote, directed, and produced it, but did the editing, the music and even the narration. Objectivity isn't his goal, either with all the elements of the film, from his audibly breaking voice to the compelling montage, Kuenne shows us his sorrow over his deceased friend, his admiration for Andrew's parents, and his disdain for the woman who stole his friend's life away.
