The Standardsand Procedures outlined are intended to establish a clear and consistent guide for safework habits.The goal of all safety practices is to identify and eliminate or minimize occupationalsafety and health risks. Investigations over the years suggest that all accidents are theresult of two major factors: Unsafe Conditions and Unsafe Acts. Both unsafe factorscan be corrected through constant vigilance and attention to proper conduct and theway the work is performed. We must accept the principle that all accidents, injuries,and occupational illnesses are preventable. We must also accept "Safety" as beingfundamental to the conduct of business.Some time ago, the chain of events concept was presented. This concept suggests allaccidents are the result of a series or chain of events which cause the accident tohappen. This can be as simple as someone spilling a slippery substance on the ¿¿¿¿oor, toa more serious happening such as the "Shü¿¿¿le Challenger" disaster a few decades ago.In any accident or injury, a series of things will happen to bring about the accident.Where you are in the chain will decide if you are a contributor or a statistic. Acontributor does not correct a potentially dangerous situation; a statistic is the onewho was injured as a result of the preceding acts or actions.
