Around 1800, a new understanding emerged of what constitutes a literary genre. This study examines this development by considering the example of tragedy. It looks at canonic and non-canonic works to outline a little known literary-historical process shaped by the interplay of literature and philosophy, allowing the reader to better understand one aspect of this important epoch of German literature.
