Digitalisation in dentistry: the pros and cons

Developments in new digital manufacturing techniques have virtually revolutionised dental technology. As the manufacture of dental prostheses involves products custom-made for individual patients, a high standard of quality in production is essential to remain competitive in the market. This does not readily lend itself to mass production methods used in industry. As there is generally a close working relationship between dentists and dental technicians, there has been, at least until now, little interest in large-scale industrial firms taking on such manufacturing. However, SMEs must face up to these developments and factor forthcoming investments into their budget planning.
