India is among the leading countries in aquaculture production, providing essential economic support to a significant portion of the population. However, disease outbreaks have become a major obstacle to the sustainable production and trade of aquaculture products. Multiple stress factors, such as inadequate physicochemical and microbial water quality, poor nutritional status, and high stocking density, contribute to infections by opportunistic pathogens. The presence of various opportunistic bacterial pathogens and parasites poses a significant threat, resulting in substantial fish losses, reduced growth, and increased costs associated with chemical use for prevention and control. Alternative disease management strategies, including probiotics, bacteriophages, and environmental factors such as water temperature and quality, play crucial roles in influencing microbial pathogen dynamics. Effective biosecurity measures, vaccination, and the adoption of a One Health approach can mitigate the impacts of microbial pathogens in aquaculture.
