Each in Her Own Way

This collection of biographies of five women leaders from the developing world describes some of the social and economic changes of that world - changes that often make the lives of poor women even poorer and more precarious. Each story gives a face and a voice to issues that confront many poor, rural women around the world. Elvina Mutua of Kenya concentrates on income-producing programmes for poor farm women; Hasina Khan of Bangladesh works in nonformal educational and integrated rural development; Aziza Hussein of Egypt is in the forefront of the family planning movement and the effort to win greater protection for women under law; Elizabeth O'Kelly, a former British colonial officer, pioneered in appropriate technology as it relates to women's work and started the successful Corn Mill Societies of Cameroon; and Reyna de Miralda of Honduras helped to form a national organization of peasant women, bringing them into the political process for the first time.
