Ecological Survey of Arthropod Biodiversity Status in JKKN Main Campus: Project work 2025 2026

Arthropods are the most diverse phylum in the animal kingdom, with over a million described species that play vital ecological roles such as pollination, decomposition, predation, and nutrient cycling. In semi-urban environments like college campuses, these invertebrates occupy microhabitats including gardens, lawns, and buildings, and act as indicators of environmental health. The JKKN College main campus in Komarapalayam, Namakkal District, Tamil Nadu, provides such a dynamic habitat with vegetated areas, shaded zones, and nearby agricultural lands close to Kolli Hills, yet its arthropod diversity remains poorly documented. Regional studies in Namakkal District report rich arthropod diversity, including 10 termite species and up to 46 butterfly species, particularly from the family Nymphalidae. These findings suggest similar diversity may occur on the JKKN campus, where habitat differences influence the presence of groups such as Coleoptera in litter, Orthoptera in open lawns, and Araneae in shaded areas. Campus biodiversity studies help fill knowledge gaps while promoting conservation awareness and student training in entomological methods.
