Economic Growth, Climate Change, and Agriculture

Agriculture is one of the human activities most affected by climate. The rising concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, rising temperatures, changes in rainfall patterns, and shifts in cloud cover-all these bioclimatic factors that govern the functioning of ecosystems are set to change, and we must therefore anticipate and quantify these changes and their effects on agriculture. The entire global population is currently affected by climate change, not only because of its potential impact on the environment, but also because of its effect on agricultural production. This book is the result of four articles, each of which constitutes a chapter. The first chapter is a study of several indices of climate variability in Burkina Faso. The second addresses the role of agriculture in economic growth in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The third chapter focuses on climate change and its impact on agricultural activities in the BUZI group in South Kivu Province, DR Congo. The final chapter examines trends in agricultural production and population in North Kivu.
