Embodying the Artificial: Dance and HumanAI Co-creativity

Embodying the artificial explores dance creation with generative AI and other technologies. Drawing on ethnographic research, it examines the kinesthetic, ontological, and ethical dimensions of human–AI co-creation, offering frameworks for choreographers to engage critically and creatively with intelligent machines. What happens when machines begin to dance—not as tools, but as creative partners? Embodying the Artificial examines how dance creation unfolds in dialogue with generative AI and related technologies. Grounded in ethnographic research, it foregrounds the kinesthetic dimensions of human-AI interaction, revealing how generative systems reshape the creation and performance of dance. Through analyses of diverse human–AI dance practices involving AI avatars and related technologies, the book interrogates the ontological, epistemological, and ethical questions that emerge when machines become creative partners —challenging established notions of dance, embodiment, and creativity. Bridging theory and practice, this research offers a conceptual and methodological framework for understanding human-AI interaction in dance. It introduces a clear taxonomy for categorizing interdisciplinary creative processes across different technological configurations and provides choreographers and movement artists with tools to navigate, design, and critically reflect on co-creative processes with artificial agents. Diego Marin-Bucio completed his PhD research at the University of Oslo (Norway). He is a performing artist, director, and researcher bridging embodied cognition, dance, and posthuman artistic practice. His research investigates how creative action in dance emerges from embodied processes across human and human–AI contexts. He conducted a research stay at the Leverhulme Centre for the Future of Intelligence (University of Cambridge, UK) and served as a guest lecturer at Institut del Teatre de Barcelona, Spain. His work has been presented internationally and recognized with distinctions including the One Dance UK Awards shortlist (2022) and the Saberes Danzados Award 2025 from the National Institute of Fine Arts of Mexico (INBAL).
