Emotional Quotient (EQ) in children refers to the ability to recognize, understand, regulate, and express emotions effectively in oneself and during social interactions. In the dental operatory, where fear, anxiety, and unfamiliar stimuli are common, a child's emotional competence plays a crucial role in determining behaviour and cooperation during dental procedures. Children with higher EQ typically demonstrate better emotional regulation, reduced dental anxiety, clearer communication, and greater adaptability to clinical situations. They tend to respond more positively to behaviour guidance techniques such as tell-show-do, positive reinforcement, distraction, and modelling. In contrast, children with lower EQ often exhibit heightened fear, impulsivity, resistance, and negative behavioural responses, which may complicate dental management. Assessing the emotional profile of paediatric patients enables dentists to anticipate behavioural reactions and individualize behaviour management strategies. Incorporating emotional awareness into paediatric dental practice promotes empathy, trust, and patient-centred communication, thereby enhancing chairside efficiency and treatment outcomes.
