In Paris in the nineties, Cassis' childhood is filled with fantasy, fears, laughter and bickering with her brother Matteo in the midst of a loving, intelligent and generous family. It sounds ideal and yet behind the happy facade and conventional pleasures, ghostly shadows lurk, similar to the recurring migraines that plague Cassis. When Cassis turns twelve and is confronted, alone, with the secret that has stunted and stifled her family, not only her own life but the entire family equilibrium crumbles. What follows is twenty years of the Lauper family as seen through the eyes of Cassis and the questions that haunt her. Where and when does childhood end? What role do our childhood memories, often fuzzy, if not pure invention, play in our adult lives? How can you mature when you are nostalgic about a past that didn't exist, about the fantasied image of a family that could have existed, in theory?
