Enigma of the Chantry Psalter: New Adventures Sherlock Holmes

**A priceless medieval manuscript. A phantom poisoner. A lethal secret waiting five centuries to be unveiled.** When the Reverend Tobias Winter arrives at 221B Baker Street on an autumn evening in 1894, he brings no crude tale of common violence, but a mystery of exquisite subtlety: a fourteenth-century illuminated leaf from a sacred chantry psalter whose painted monarch is slowly, inexplicably fading. While the holy text and gold leaf remain pristine, the royal mantle of King David-once a brilliant ultramarine lapis lazuli-is turning a sickly slate grey. More alarming still, the vellum exhales the sweet, deadly odor of prussic acid. What begins as a seemingly impossible decay of ancient pigments quickly draws Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John H. Watson into the shadowy, frost-bitten cloisters of St. Jude's-in-the-Fens in Clerkenwell. There, beneath the gaze of recumbent stone crusaders, Holmes deduces a diabolical truth: the vellum is not simply decaying-it is being systematically murdered. The illuminated leaf is a palimpsest, concealing beneath its sacred imagery a long-lost royal charter of King Edward II that dictates the fate of a vast Yorkshire fortune. To catch an educated adversary whose weapon of choice is invisible gas, Holmes and Watson must mount a midnight vigil from the heights of the organ loft, outwitting a predator who uses the refined chemistry of the nineteenth century to wage the legal battles of the fourteenth. Penned in the authentic, classic voice of Dr. John H. Watson, *Enigma of the Chantry Psalter* is a rich, atmosphere-soaked Victorian pastiche complete with forensic deduction, scholarly intrigue, and period illustrations that will delight traditional Sherlockians and historical mystery lovers alike.
