This study aims to promote sustainable development through the establishment of KoloAla production sites, whilst identifying any negative impacts in order to prevent them and to enhance the positive impacts. A KoloAla production site comprises a forest of over 10,000 hectares where the local population practises sustainable forestry. The forests of the Melaky Region are rich in exploitable species that can be used as fuelwood and timber. A standing tree costs between 130,000 and 280,000 Ar, depending on its use class. The only KoloAla production site in the Melaky Region that complies with the principles for establishing KoloAla sites is located in the Maintirano District. This site is divided into four zones: a zone for management transfer, a zone for direct management, a zone for delegated management and a protection zone. The establishment of this KoloAla production site will lead to population growth and regional development, changes to certain bio-ecological processes, and disruption to the population's customary practices.
