The growing need to preserve the environment and the well-being of the population has challenged the scientific community with regard to animal waste treatment processes. Unpleasant odours are regularly associated with intensive production systems due to the large volume of liquid waste, which is normally managed in manure pits or stabilisation ponds. Appropriate management technologies associated with the overproduction of animal waste can mitigate environmental risks. This work addresses the application of composting and vermicomposting processes, as well as the association between the two as a tool for managing organic waste from animal production.
