ESRANGE information booklet, June 1970

Booklet provides basic information about working at the Esrange base and living in the Swedisch town of Kiruna. Includes following message of J-O Lenman, head of Esrange in 1970. "A PERSONAL MESSAGE TO NEW STAFF MEMBERS I am glad to take this opportunity to welcome you to the European Sounding Rocket Range - ESRange. The main purpose of this booklet is to give you an overall idea of the conditions, facilities and regulations at ESRange and, since the staff is international, to provide information about the living conditions in the North, which might be of particular interest to new staff members from outside sweden. The European SpaceResearch Organisation (ESRO), of which ESRange is one of the centres, is a young organisation, but we have already achievements to our credit which allow us to be proud : more than 90 sounding rockets carrying scientific payloads have, for instance, been launched from ESRange, which is used not only for ESRO's own sounding rocket programme, but also for launchings sponsored directly by scientific organisations in the Member States. As can easily be imagined, the activities at a rocket range require special qualities of the staff engaged in the work. many of the events studied by the scientists are of short duration and occurring at unpredictable times. The standby waiting for the right launching conditions might be long, and sometimes dull, but when the rocket finally is launched the success will always depend on the co-ordinated efforts of all staff involved in the preparations and the launching. Only by keeping abreast of the most modern techniques in every aspect of our work, and by maintaining the highest standards, can we achieve our difficult but stimulating task.
