THE BITTER PILL June 2006. Marion Larat is an active and brilliant young woman who completed the demanding post-sixth-form "classe préparatoire" and secured a place in a highly competitive "grande école" for business studies. While waiting for her results at her parents' house, she suddenly collapsed having suffered a stroke. She then underwent nine operations and months of physiotherapy and speech therapy to restore the power of speech and the ability to write. Despite her significant disabilities, she tried to return to her studies, but it proved too demanding for her. She does still battle for her own place in the world of work, though, and she now hopes to design and market more attractive and feminine styles of support stockings than those offered by hospitals. More importantly, she is committed to fighting for the truth since discovering that the contraceptive pill was responsible for her stroke. Why was the connection between the pill and strokes not established sooner? Why did her gynaecologist never flag up the dangers of the pill, particularly the latest variants? In 2012, Marion Larat lodged a complaint against the CEO of the Bayer Santé laboratories and the CEO of the French national agency for the safety of medicines, accusing them of involuntarily endangering the entire population. Since then other complaints have been lodged, and Marion Larat has pursued her search for justice. With this book, co-written with her sister, she hopes other young women will be better informed. Marion Larat is 26 years old. She is an entrepreneur and lives in Bordeaux.
