Essie

A family story brought her to Ireland. The evidence may change everything she thought she knew.Essie Cantwell has spent years following her ancestors through parish registers, graveyard surveys, faded maps, and family stories handed down without proof. Now one name has brought her across the Atlantic: Ana Cantwell, a woman buried in County Kilkenny whose life may hold the key to Essie's own family history.Standing in a rain-soaked Irish graveyard, Essie finally finds Ana's name carved into stone. But finding a grave is not the same as proving a life. With her mother, Amy, and her map-minded companion, Will, beside her, Essie begins following the evidence wherever it leads-from an 1847 relief ledger and a daughter's baptism to a questionable marriage, forgotten archival papers, an unsent letter, and the tantalizing trace of a piece of music carried through generations. Each discovery brings Essie closer to the women behind the family tree-and to a truth far more complicated than the story her family remembered.Part mystery, part journey into the intimate work of genealogy, ESSIE is a warm and deeply human novella about mothers and daughters, family secrets, the stories we inherit, and the difference between what we want to believe and what we can prove.Because sometimes the missing pieces of a family history are not meant to be filled in.They are meant to be understood.
