Ethics in Animal Experimentation: Limits and Controversies of a Practice

The use of non-human animals as a tool in biomedical research and industry testing for human consumption has been incorporated into scientific practices and assimilated as a fundamental part of development in these areas. The systematic review of the results of preclinical phase protocols is not common practice, but recent meta-analysis studies question the ability to project these data to humans, including everything from basic research to the results of tests to assess the carcinogenic potential of products for human use. Coupled with scientific questioning, a comprehensive ethical discussion overlaps in contemporary society, involving various areas of knowledge, including within the scientific community itself, due to the ethical conflicts inherent in the instrumentalization of non-human animal life, reaching its peak in the creation of transgenic animals. Through the review and analysis of scientific controversies and ethical conflicts, the proposal to develop and adopt techniques that replace the use of non-human animals demonstrates our ability to manage the duality of ethics and innovation.
