Everybody Came Back: Leadership Lessons from the Trail

A trail is dirt. A hike is people. Most people think leading a group hike is about knowing the route. Evan Cole thought so too-until an experienced hike leader named Walt began showing him everything he wasn't seeing. The weather that changes. The hiker who stops talking. The junction everyone assumes is obvious. The person who is stronger than they realize-and the one who isn't. The disagreement that quietly creates two leaders. The decision to turn around when no one can prove you need to.Through a series of entertaining, sometimes funny, and surprisingly human stories, Everybody Came Back explores the judgment behind good leadership on the trail.Gary A. Pryde draws on decades of group-hiking experience to examine lessons in preparation, communication, accountability, decision-making, mentoring, teamwork, and responsibility. This isn't a technical hiking manual. It's a book about people-and what happens when someone accepts responsibility for helping a group get where it is going and return safely.Because reaching the destination is only half the job.You still have to bring everybody back.
