What is happening to the world? For decades, we were promised a better future. We were encouraged to study, to educate ourselves, to cooperate, to respect others, and to trust in knowledge as a tool for advancing as a society. We were taught to recycle, to avoid littering, to consume responsibly, and to care for a planet we knew was finite. And yet, today we see empty rhetoric triumph, leaders who speak of what they don't know, who disregard scientific evidence, and who don't hesitate to trample on others to maintain or display power. We live in an increasingly unstable climate while rents rise, precariousness becomes normalized, and inequality widens. Has the world gone mad? Throughout the history of life on Earth, millions of species have appeared and disappeared. Major biological crises have reshaped the planet time and again. But perhaps this time we won't need an asteroid like the one that wiped out most of the dinosaurs. Perhaps we don't need an external cataclysm. What if we ourselves are our meteorite? What if we have created, nurtured, and normalized our own horsemen of the Apocalypse?
