"The central aim of this book is to explore the shocks and transformations impacting modern Chinese national identity within the context of intellectual history. Beginning with the assault of modernity upon the traditional ""tianxia concept"" (all-under-heaven worldview), the author examines various attempts within modern Chinese intellectual revolutions. These include Confucianism, the late Qing Constitutionalists and Revolutionaries, late Qing local and individual identities, the May Fourth era's ""cosmopolitanism,"" the tension between cultural heritage (civilization) and national prosperity (wealth and power), and nationalism.
