Final Set

Nora Vance knows what improvement looks like. For fifteen years, she has coached recreational tennis at the Harwick Falls rec center, teaching the same corrections, running the same drills, and helping ordinary players become a little better than they were the week before. Her own competitive career ended with a damaged shoulder long ago, and she has built a quiet life around the game she could no longer play. Then sixteen-year-old Dani Cross walks through the side gate.Dani is self-taught, underfunded, and almost entirely untrained. She has spent four years hitting against a wall, studying technique videos, and teaching herself whatever no one else was available to teach her. Her mechanics are rough. Her instincts are not. What begins as one early-morning session becomes months of relentless work: grips, footwork, serves, match play, county tournaments, rankings-and eventually an opportunity at an elite academy that can give Dani what Nora cannot. But developing a gifted player creates a question Nora never expected to face. What does a good coach do when success means becoming unnecessary?Final Set is a character-driven sports novella about talent, discipline, mentorship, and the difficult moment when helping someone reach the next level means letting them leave the court you built together. The manuscript follows Dani from an eight-month rec-center waitlist to high-level junior competition while Nora learns to redefine what successful coaching actually means.
