Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions

Edwin A. Abbott's Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions is a brilliant mathematical fantasy and biting satire of Victorian culture. In a two-dimensional universe inhabited by living geometric shapes, social standing is defined by the number of sides you possess. Triangles are lowly laborers, squares and pentagons make up the middle class, and the noble polygons rule. In this strict society, women are viewed as little more than straight lines-incapable of intellect and required to keep their backs turned for safety.Visited by a mysterious Sphere from three-dimensional 'Spaceland,' the Square is suddenly faced with proof of a world beyond his comprehension. When he attempts to share his newfound knowledge of higher dimensions with his fellow citizens, he is met with hostility, disbelief, and danger.Equal parts science fiction, geometry tutorial, and social critique, Flatland remains a timeless classic. It masterfully challenges readers to question their own perceptions of reality and the limitations of their understanding.
