Bol Most mystics look like they belong in a monastery. Florence Scovel Shinn looked like she belonged at the Ritz. In the history of American metaphysics, she stands out as a vibrant splash of color against a grey background. Her predecessors-Phineas Quimby, Thomas Troward, and Wallace Wattles-were serious men who treated spirituality as a form of engineering. They wrote dense, logical treatises on the "Formless Substance."Florence, by contrast, wrote a playbook. She argued that life was not a battle to be fought, but a game to be played. And like any game, it had rules. If you learned the rules-Karma, Non-Resistance, Forgiveness, and the Power of the Word-you could win. This book is the story of how a Philadelphia blue-blood lost her perfect life, found a higher law, and taught the Jazz Age how to speak its dreams into existence.
