Foot Orthoses in Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis Care: Second Edition

This book explores the clinical management of children with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA) affecting the lower limbs, focusing on the use of foot orthoses (FOs). Despite their widespread use in adult and pediatric podiatry, no clear guidelines exist for prescribing FOs in JIA. Through a randomised controlled trial conducted at Edinburgh Royal Hospital for Sick Children and Ninewells Hospital, Dundee, this study investigates the effectiveness of pre-formed semi-rigid FOs in reducing pain and improving quality of life for affected children. Unlike custom-made devices, off-the-shelf FOs are cost-effective, readily available, and can be fitted immediately, supporting early intervention to prevent long-term joint deformities. By combining clinical evidence with practical guidance, this book provides healthcare professionals with a valuable resource to optimise the multidisciplinary care of children with JIA, bridging research and everyday clinical practice.
