Fred Stone and the Frontier Circus is inspired by the childhood of author P.J. Sloane's grandfather, Fred A. Stone, the original scarecrow in "The Wizard of Oz," on Broadway in 1903. In 1884, a ten-year-old Fred Stone was hired by a frontier circus to be their new tightrope walker. His younger brother Ed, joined him, doing a tumbling act.
