Bol As an idealistic young Anglican clergyman, William Wallace (1863-1922) sailed to India in 1889 to bring the Gospel to the people of Krishnagar. Disturbed by the shallowness of the "native Christianity" that he encountered there, he came to wonder what it was about Anglicanism that seemingly rendered it unpalatable to, and even destructive of, the Indian spirit. Studying the Hindu classics also revealed to him the richness and depth of the religious tradition with which he and his fellow missionaries must contend. Over time, Wallace found himself drawn inexorably to the conclusion that Catholicism was the only form of Christianity that his beloved India would accept-and, ultimately, that it was the only form worth believing in at all.
