Gender and land governance in the Central African Republic

Agriculture and livestock farming play a dominant role in the Central African economy. They share the same characteristics, yet are practised by two communities whose socio-cultural customs are entirely different. Agriculture is shifting, as it involves moving fields from one year to the next. Livestock farming is similarly nomadic, as the animals roam freely at all times. This mobility has adverse effects on land resources and simultaneously raises the issue of property rights. The conflicts it generates between farmers and herders are far from being resolved due to the lack of an effective legal framework and sound land governance policy. Furthermore, women have no right to inherit their husband's land. Upon his death, she loses everything to his children and brothers. To resist this culture, she must join the Producers' Association.
