At its core, this work investigates the complex, highly intricate intersection where respiratory physiology, mechanical lung injury, host nutritional status, and underlying genetic vulnerability collide. The findings detailed within these chapters demonstrate that long-term lung impairment is not merely an accidental byproduct of infection but a process distinctly modulated by the host's genetic blueprint. This book highlights the powerful association between permanent pulmonary function impairment and specific single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in critical defense genes: VDR (Vitamin D Receptor), SLC11A1 (Solute Carrier Family 11 Member A1), and TLR2 (Toll-Like Receptor 2).
