Geotechnical study of the soils at Luvungi, Uvira Territory, South Kivu,

This book contributes to the geomechanical characterisation of the soils of Luvungi in the Ruzizi Plain and to the geotechnical study of these soils. We present a geotechnical study of the soils of Luvungi based on analyses of particle size distribution and water content, which enable us to determine the Atterberg limits - conventional physical constants that mark the threshold between different states, including the liquid limit and the plastic limit; these analyses have enabled us to produce a geotechnical map of the area. The water content analysis reveals that 20 per cent of the samples have a high natural water content compared with the others. The particle size analysis also shows that 20 per cent of the samples are characterised by soils with a high proportion of fine particles, whilst 80 per cent have a very low proportion of fine particles. All these analyses have enabled us to determine the nature of the soil in the area, including clays and sands.
