Bol This book contributes to the geomechanical characterisation of the soils of Luvungi in the Ruzizi Plain and to the geotechnical study of these soils. We present a geotechnical study of the soils of Luvungi based on analyses of particle size distribution and water content, which enable us to determine the Atterberg limits - conventional physical constants that mark the threshold between different states, including the liquid limit and the plastic limit; these analyses have enabled us to produce a geotechnical map of the area. The water content analysis reveals that 20 per cent of the samples have a high natural water content compared with the others. The particle size analysis also shows that 20 per cent of the samples are characterised by soils with a high proportion of fine particles, whilst 80 per cent have a very low proportion of fine particles. All these analyses have enabled us to determine the nature of the soil in the area, including clays and sands.
