Ulcerative colitis (UC) is one of the two main forms of chronic inflammatory bowel disease; it is a recurrent inflammation of the colonic mucosa, extending to varying degrees from the rectum to the caecum. The aim of this study was to analyse the link between colonic oxidative stress induced by acetic acid and colonic inflammation, as well as the protective effect of chamomile decoction. Acetic acid intoxication led to an accumulation of reactive oxygen species, which is associated with a state of oxidative stress and colonic inflammation. The chamomile decoction eliminated almost all of the intestinal disturbances caused by experimental colitis. The chamomile decoction provided effective enteroprotection and could have significant applications in other digestive disorders.
