Gil Evans is probably the most under-appreciated composer/arranger in jazz history--except among jazz musicians. The best example of his extraordinary work can be heard on the recently released Blu-ray version of Miles Davis' concert, playing music from their 3 classic collaborations, entitled "Miles Davis with Quincey Jones & the Gil Evans Orchestra Live at Montreux 1991." It's astonishing music, and an astonishing moment in jazz since Miles was only 3 months from his death & there was a question as to whether he had the chops to actually play this music he swore he would never return to. This DVD above, "Gil Evans and his Orchestra," is all we have, I believe, of Evans recorded in video while he was alive with his off-&-on working band.
