Give Us Our Blue Skies Back traces one of Japan’s earliest and most enduring environmental movements, led by the Tobata Ward Collaborative Women’s Association in Kitakyushu from 1950 to 1969. At a time when pollution was celebrated as a symbol of industrial progress, nearly seven thousand housewives—most of them ordinary, largely uneducated women—mobilized to confront the toxic air darkening their skies and harming their families.
