Global Migration and Social Change- Precarious Citizenship in Brexit Britain

Available open access digitally under CC-BY-NC-ND licence. What happens when the promise of European free movement collides with the realities of neoliberal governance in Brexit Britain? This timely study examines the experiences of racialized Roma EU citizens in the UK, focusing on Sheffield and Glasgow before and after Brexit. As the largest and most marginalized ethnic minority in Europe, many Roma viewed EU citizenship as a pathway out of persecution and poverty. Yet their encounters with UK politics and policy revealed the limits of a ‘multi-level’, ‘market’ citizenship. Combining political theory with grounded empirical research, this book offers vital ethical and policy insights for scholars, practitioners and decision-makers across Europe.
