God Bless America

Kassie Vale came home to Sycamore Falls for the summer with a camera, a hundred and forty thousand followers, and a plan to turn her small Louisiana hometown into her next breakout series. At first, it feels easy to film the place she knows by heart: Depot Street, Lottie's Diner, her mother's screened porch, the slow heat of a town that never quite changes. But then Kassie notices the new storefront dressed in oversized American flags and the smiling language of "community," "history," and "faith." The Sycamore Falls Heritage Committee says it wants to protect the town's values. Kassie's camera catches something darker. As her series gains traction, Kassie is pulled deeper into a summer of uneasy reunions, old friendships, buried histories, and a dangerous romance with Mason Cole, the charismatic man at the center of it all. The more she films, the more she realizes that what looks like small-town patriotism is something far more deliberate - a polished, media-savvy movement built on fear, control, and the weaponization of belonging. And by the time Kassie understands how fully she has been used, the town is already moving toward violence.Sharp, atmospheric, and unflinching, God Bless America is a Southern literary thriller about performance, complicity, race, power, and the terrifying ease with which nationalism can dress itself up as nostalgia.
