Good Fire Journaling: Through Pyrosketchology Practices

Good fire is both science, stewardship, and story. This unique field guide introduces a practical, deeply sensory approach to observing prescribed and cultural burning. Through journaling techniques that integrate data, sketching, and environmental awareness, readers learn to recognize patterns in fuels, weather, fire behavior, smoke, and fire effects within the context of burn goals, objectives, and environmental conditions. Designed for fire practitioners, students, and those interested in land stewardship, the book supports situational awareness, ecological understanding, and respectful relationships with fire. It complements formal fire training while cultivating the intuitive observation skills that experienced fire professionals rely on.Miriam Morrill is the author of Pyrosketchology and a retired federal fire specialist whose career has spanned firefighting, wildlife biology, climate adaptation, and fire education.
