Jacek Yerka, whose full name is Jacek Ryszard Kowalski, was born in 1952 in Toruń. Drawing on a precise painting technique modeled after the old masters (Jan van Eyck, Hieronymus Bosch) but above all on his boundless imagination, Yerka created his own surreal world. It is full of symbolism, details, references to fairy tales, mythology, and surreal dreams. His style combines surreal compositions with meticulous realism, commonly referred to as "fantastic realism." His work is particularly admired by fantasy enthusiasts; in 1995, he won the prestigious World Fantasy Award for Best Artist at the World Fantasy Convention.
