Why this book on Lord Govinda, the Krishna? Before we follow the arc of Govinda's earthly life, before his midnight birth in Kamsa's prison, before his childhood in the cowherd paradise of Vrindavan, before his role as the pivotal strategist of the Mahabharata and the philosophical guide of the Bhagavad Gita, we must sit with the most fundamental question that his life poses, and poses with an urgency that no amount of devotional enthusiasm or academic distance can dissolve: Who is Krishna?
