Bol Grand Vitaah, a vibrant voice in the heart of Bum Quarters, holds court, weaving together the stories and experiences of his community. An Abapkwa man with a sharp eye and a self-proclaimed knack for social critique, he acts as a modern-day griot, a Sangntoh, interpreting the world around him. With the perspective of one who has witnessed the passing of time, Vitaah compares life in Bum Quarters at the close of the 20th century with its beginnings. He observes the neighbourhood children, the young women entering into marriage, and the aspirations of those striving for economic and technological advancement. This work, an African comedy born in Bamenda, is seasoned with the local flavours of raffia wine and kola nut humour. It offers a glimpse into the social history of the region, exploring its unique worldview, spirituality, religious beliefs, and the ever-present influence of the outside world. The dialogue, rich in Pidgin, reflects the evolution of this dynamic language. Born from the fusion of Old Krio, English, and other European languages, Pidgin emerged as Africans navigated the complexities of interaction and trade with the West.
