Grape Leaves

Arab American poetry is an especially rich, people-involved, passionate literature that has been spawned, at least until recently, in isolation from the American mainstream. This highly-praised anthology reflects the renaissance in the literature of what may be the latest ethnic community to assert itself. Twenty poets are represented in this collection. The editors include a brief biography of each poet, together with a selection of each poet's work. The short bios offer fascinating glimpses into Arab American literary history. It starts with Kahlil Gibran and Ameen Rihani and includes celebrated contemporaries who write in Arabic or English or both. Contributors include: Kahlil Gibran, Ameen Rihani, Jamil Holway, Mikhail Naimy, Elia Abu Madi, Etel Adnan, Naomi Shihab Nye, D.H. Melhem, Samuel Hazo, Joseph Awad, Eugene Paul Nasser, H.S. (Sam) Hamod, Jack Marshall, Fawaz Turki, Doris Safie, Ben Bennani, Sharif Elmusa, Lawrence Joseph, Gregory Orfalea, and Elmaz Abinader.
