GREAT COUNTRY IS WHAT LEADERS MAKE OF IT, A: 5 Rules for Laos and Aspiring Nations

In a world marked by turbulence, how are nations to survive and thrive? The answer is to build a great country. The book draws on lessons from countries around the world to offer five practical rules for national greatness: be clean and green, anticipate crisis, take care of the most vulnerable, be generous, and be geopolitically competent. Greatness is not only about glorious history, wealth, size, military power, or cities filled with shining towers. Leadership is decisive. A great country is built by choices, not by chance. For Laos to become a great country, leaders at all levels must move from slogans to execution: keep villages, roads, rivers, and public spaces clean; protect forests and watersheds; build anticipatory systems for climate, financial, and other shocks; lift poor families through learning, land, and labor; turn Lao generosity into organized international cooperation; and make Laos not only land-linked, but indispensable, through water, energy, tourism, logistics, and diplomacy. Followed seriously, this guide can help Laos and other nations become not only richer, but healthier, fairer, resilient, and more respected. If more countries choose this path, the world itself can become a more sustainable and peaceful place.
