The use of gypsum in construction has been increasing due to its low cost and favorable properties. The incorporation of plant fibers, such as dried coconut fiber, aims to improve the performance of the composites by reducing cracks and enhancing thermal and acoustic insulation. This study compared conventional gypsum boards with sandwich-type composites consisting of layers of gypsum and 8- and 10-mm-thick sheets of dried coconut fiber. The results showed that the composites exhibited better thermal and acoustic performance, especially as the thickness of the mat increased. Regarding mechanical properties, there was a reduction in compressive and flexural strength when compared to pure gypsum. However, the presence of the fibers prevented sudden fractures, providing greater ductility and allowing the composites to continue bearing loads after reaching maximum strength.
